Real Talk: Who's Miss Independent?

We are most familiar with the title: Miss Independent. After Ne-yo’s smashing hit, named after Miss Independent, woman can’t seem to let that name rest. Miss Independent has become most popular and has been adding many women to her movement. But who is she? Is she that feminist or activist like Yaa asentwaa? Is she all that a man is looking for? Where is she from? And do the women who call themselves Miss Independent live up that name? Who is Miss Independent?

We interviewed 20 women and men of different ethnic backgrounds (African, British, Dutch, German and Carrebean) between the age of 20 and 35. Here are some of they’re views and what Abina can conclude:

“Miss Independent comes from a strong background, whereby family and setting priorities is important. She is that well-to-do woman, who knows what she wants. She does not need anybody to take care of hers, she got her own. This can be expressed in much: such as, a house, business, own vision, and name it.”

n Seona, London, UK

“I think the attitude of Miss Independent is rather unnecessarily dominant an guarded up. I love me a woman who is strong, don’t get me wrong. But the women, who have crowned themselves to Miss Independent, won’t let a man be a man, especially black women. They let the Miss Independent movement get to their heads. That’s why they don’t easily get a man. Cause they are so guarded up that they won’t let a man come into their lives. The women who don’t flaunt with the title are the real Miss Independent.”

n Micheal, Hamburg, Germany.

  1. Miss Independent is a real woman. She is that kind of woman who you find as a man. And should be happy to be with. Because she has goods to bring to the table. A mindset, wisdon, career. Some can take it to another level, like Micheal meant. But Miss Independent got the goods!

  2. If you're threathened by Miss Independent? Then you must be Mr Weak! Just because she's powefull and strong doesn't mean will not let a man be a man. It means that she is Herself with or without you. That's how women should be. We've been depressed for too long. Especially African Women. Let's stop being push overs.

  4. I think the movement should be cut short. Half of these women who call themselves independent. Are dependent as f**k. Especially these younger women who still live at home. If you're independent. Show Your independence and I'll gladly applaud you. Till then, you are whoever you are.

  5. Im so liking the comments of Felicia and Frank.. It's true, Ms Independent is a Strong Women that does NOT depend on anybody else but herself. She knows her position in life and what she aims for. And a man that can't deal with that kind of strength is not the man for her. She needs a Strong Mister besides her ;-)

I think that Miss Independent can come across intimidating. But it's because she is so powerful and there aren't many men who like that. Miss Independent is opinionate and fully grounded. A lot of men want a woman the can direct. Some men like to be in control. Miss Independent rather follows her own direction. So you as a man should look at what you can handle. I personally look up to Miss independent. Because she is so strong, most of the time she has her strength from life experiences. That is what I am looking for. I love this post.

  7. After Ne yo's hit. This Miss Independent thing ran through women's head. Undeserved women started using Independent quotes, such as: I pay my own. Well.. some still relied on men to buy them fancy things. Too crzy, I think
